Coventry Deanery Vocation Mass at All Souls Monday 6th February 7.00pm
The main celebrant was Monsignor John Armitage, an East London parish priest in the heart of London's Olympic zone and Vicar General of Brentwood Diocese and Catholic chaplain for the London 2012 Olympics.  It was a great success and the church was full, with pupils from all 18 Catholic Primary schools present, along with parents and teachers. The Mass was partly a celebration of Catholic education but also an opportunity to promote vocations. This year the Mass was led by Bishop Ullathorne.

With a voice reminiscent of Bob Hoskins, it's easy to tell that  Monsignor John Armitage has lived in the East End all his life. A real Londoner, easy to listen to, inspiring and full of passion!! The theme of
the Mass was to seek out your vocation. Mgr John explained that it is important we understand who we are, and how we best live the life God intended us to. "Everybody is unique in the eyes of God similar to our DNA. So ask yourself what is God calling me to do. To help do this pray to God every day, and try be generous and kind to others every day". He reminded us that a vocation is something that happens to all us. Echoing the Holy Father he challenged us all to be saints, to be the human beings God really wants us to be.

The mass had an emphasis on the Olympics, with the altar having the 5 Olympic Rings placed in front of the Altar representing the five continents involved.
At the end of mass Mgr John mentioned two websites to look at:
  • www.morethangold.org.uk  more than gold - helping your church make the most of the 2012 gamest
  • www.johnpaul2foundation4sport.org  John Paul ll Foundation for Sport, designed to promote sport to people of all ages and abilities as well as the attainment of ‘Peace through Sport’.
Of course football was also mentioned with Mgr John being a West Ham follower and top of the same league that Coventry are bottom in.

At the moment All Souls have been working hard over many years to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. They currently have a young man at seminary, training for the diocesan priesthood and another young man, training for priesthood with the Franciscans. Both of whom went to the primary school, All Souls Catholic Primary School. There is also a man training to be a deacon and a woman doing further studies as a catechist and she helps prepare people for Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation. In addition the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton Kiernan Conry, and the Bishop of Salford, Terence Brain are both from Coventry.
